For his exhibition at Le 19M by Maison Chanel, Yassine Mekhnache created a monumental six-meter tapestry in collaboration with exceptional women embroiderers in Morocco. Combining traditional embroidery with abstract painting, the work reflects a dialogue between craftsmanship, memory, and contemporary gesture. Yassine Mekhnache develops a practice that moves between painting, textile, and gesture. Born in Lyon in 1979, he began with street graffiti before evolving toward a more abstract and meditative visual language. Since 2007, he has collaborated with embroiderers in Morocco and artisans in India Influenced by Sufi philosophy and The Conference of the Birds, Mekhnache approaches abstraction as a journey rather than an image. His works explore memory, movement, and transformation through layered materials and expressive marks. His work has been shown internationally at institutions and biennales including the Palais de Tokyo, the Dakar Biennale, and exhibitions in Paris, Casablanca, and New York. A retrospective at Le 19M / Chanel in 2023 highlighted his ongoing dialogue between contemporary painting and traditional craftsmanship.
